D.C. Area Au Pairs Help Bring Healthy Returns to Low-Income Children
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Sunday, November 7, au pairs from over 7 countries teamed up with DC Central Kitchen's Healthy Returns program to bring healthy meals and snacks to low-income children and at-risk youth in the Washington, D.C., area.
Thirteen au pairs from Au Pair in America (www.aupairinamerica.com) gathered on Sunday at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Bowie, MD, to help to make 470 servings of snack mix. The healthy food will be distributed to agencies that are partners with the DC Central Kitchen (www.dccentralkitchen.org) such as Angel Youth Outreach Ministries and Community of Hope Health Services.
"One of the most touching elements of the au pair program is that our girls are always very willing to reach out and give back to the community," explains Au Pair in America's Maryland counselor and event organizer, Christine Connally. "Working with DC Central Kitchen and helping children was a perfect fit. The girls love working with children, and being able to help kids in need is something very near and dear to their hearts."
Visit Christine Connally's blog, Au Pair Chatter, for the full recap and pictures from the special day: http://blogs.aupairinamerica.com/mdf/2010/11/08/charity-event-a-huge-success/comment-page-1/#comment-5899.
The DC Central Kitchen's Healthy Returns program gives priority to agencies that focus on empowering life-skills, including mentoring, apprenticeship, continuing education, counseling, nutrition and health education, as well as job readiness skills. In addition to healthy food, the program provides nutritional education. Through interactive and fun lessons, children are taught the skills that will enable them to make healthy food choices throughout their lives.
Au Pair in America, the nation's first legal au pair agency celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2011, matches potential au pairs that meet the different criteria posed by host families. Both au pairs and families complete a thorough application and matching process to ensure the best situation for all parties.
Regulated by the U.S. Department of State's Exchange Visitor Program, the au pair program allows 18- to 26-year-old foreign women the opportunity to live in the U.S. for up to two years as live-in child care providers. Each au pair is screened thoroughly, must have at least 200 hours of recent, documented child care experience, and speaks proficient English.
To learn more about the Au Pair in America program in the greater Maryland/D.C. area, visit Au Pair in America on the web at www.aupairinamerica.com or contact local counselor Christine Connally at (301) 860-1314.
The nation's first and largest au pair program, Au Pair in America combines live-in child care and cultural exchange for a mutually rewarding and enriching experience for the entire family. Since 1986, they have placed more than 83,000 au pairs in 40 states. Headquartered in Stamford, CT, Au Pair in America maintains offices in 5 countries and has a network of more than 600 employees worldwide.
